⇓in character⇓

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Joi will like hugs and being hugged when she fully comes to terms with having a Replicant body, but it may take a while for that to realize

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: as a Replicant, she'll be relatively stronger and at least as durable as a person, but she has no training in self defense and it likely wasn't in her programming since she started as a hologram.

ROMANCE/FLIRTING: Is your character K? No? Then, no thank you.

SEXUAL CONTENT: Again, not unless it's K, please!

PSYCHIC ABILITIES: none

MAGIC/POWERS: none

MEDICAL INFORMATION: stronger and durable

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS: the assertion that beings like K (and now herself) aren't as human as anyone else, people insulting or treating K poorly.

⇓out of character⇓

BACKTAGGING: Absolutely!

FOURTH WALLING: Please don't.

THREADHOPPING: Go for it!

CONTENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED WARNINGS FOR, BUT CAN STILL PLAY: For me, nothing.

CONTENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED WARNINGS FOR AND THAT I CAN'T PLAY: Harm to cats.

ANYTHING ELSE: I'm pretty easy-going! Even heavy subjects like rape doesn't bother me. The only thing which flat-out sends me into an anxiety attack is harm to cats.

★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Joi
Character Age: looks like a woman in her early twenties
Character Species: Replicant, once a hologram
Current Health: good, though getting used to having an actual body
Outfit: usually something soft, yet sexy

Character Canon: Blade Runner 2049
Link to History: here
Canon Point: after Luv destroyed Joi's emanator
Canon Iteration: canon alternate
Canon Iteration Explanation: while the character was a hologram in the original canon, she'll be "brought back" as a Replicant to make her more of an object permanence
★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills: none at this time, aside from what she'll be gifted by becoming a Replicant
Canon Abilities: can basically be whatever a person wants her to be by picking up on context clues and exact specifications
Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: What looks like neon white wings and a neon yellow halo, both reflecting an expected look an angel is to have
Role Reasoning: Joi's ceaseless love and belief in K will be reflected by her becoming quite literally his "angel." Joi always believed that K was special and while she was incorrect in her deduction it demonstrated her deep faith in K and that she believed in him. Just prior to Joi's emanator being destroyed and her being "killed," her last words were to protect K and tell him she loved him. Despite being a hologram, she displayed a great deal of personal independence, up to and including hiring a prostitute for her to sync with so it could seem as though K was making love to her.
★ Personality ★

Please choose one of the follow options for your personality section. Please clarify which option you have picked and, if option 2, which questions you are answering:

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?

  • What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it? Learning that a human and a Replicant could have a child. Joi was in awe of this possibility, willing to help K do whatever research he had to do to prove the existence of the child. She firmly believed the child was K due to the fact that he had a memory of a wooden horse that he'd thrown into a fire to keep bullies from getting a hold of it. That horse was inscribed with 6.10.21 which was confirmed by K finding a toy horse with that exact date. Joi felt that she always knew K was special and the idea of him being a child born of a human and a Replicant was thrilling to her. She started calling K "Joe" afterwards since she believed he deserved a proper name being born rather than made in her beliefs.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why? K, hands down. K is the center of her universe, as was expected of a Joi hologram. However, this Joi demonstrated a deep connection to K and clearly wanted to make him happy and take care of him, even when he wouldn't take care of himself. She's first introduced dressed like a 1950s housewife and serving K a holographic meal of steak and fries in an effort to make what he actually was about to eat more appealing. When K gave Joi her present of the emanator, enabling him to be able to take her with him wherever he wanted, she was genuinely overjoyed, choosing to transform herself into a surprisingly modest outfit, given that Jois were originally intended to be false wifes according to whatever their owners wanted of them. When K is forced to go on the run, Joi insists that K download all of her data to the emanator and destroy what she knew in his apartment as she knew that her information could be used to track him and she didn't want that to happen, displaying clear concern for K's well-being and safety over her own. Her last words in canon were "I love you," to K.

  • What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story? That Joi had achieved sentience on her own due to K's influence and was her own version of Joi, not just the factory model that anyone could purchase. She demonstrates that sort of intelligence by being willing to assist him with the investigation into the child born of a Replicant, by being able to make the deduction that if he wanted to know more about the memories implanted into Replicants, he should go to the one responsible for implanting the memories in the first place. If she was only a companion holo, she wouldn't be able to ake that deduction or suggest it to K. She also wouldn't be able to be so pleased to think that K was the child. K was clearly uneasy about the idea, but if Joi was only supposed to mirror his responses, she'd have been uneasy as well. Instead, she's thrilled. If she was only a companion, she wouldn't have been able to manifest herself while K was being beaten by Luv to ask her to spare him or have the emotional response of telling him that she loved him just prior to her destruction.

  • Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind? If Luv arrived or was brought about by an event, Joi would certainly hold a grudge against her, given her beating of K and her destruction of Joi's emanator. While on at least some level, Joi would be able to understand that Luv was only working according to her programming and design, Joi would also wonder why Luv wasn't able to transcend hers the way Joi had. It would depend on how Luv developed or presented herself as to whether or not Joi would be able to forgive her. If Luv was able to gain true sentience and show remorse for her brutal actions, Joi would begrudgingly forgive her. If not, Joi would keep holding a grudge for the way the other woman acted in the past.

  • What famous folklore, legend, or myth would you associate your character with? Are they literally inspired by Snow White? Do they have similar struggles or energy as Red Riding Hood? There are two: Pinocchio and Coppélia. Each involve lifelike beings which have been made by man. Like Pinocchio, Joi seems to long to be a real girl, as evidenced by the fact that she hired a prostitute for her to mesh with so it would seem as though K was making love to Joi. Also like Pinocchio, she has manifested her own personality with her own wishes and interests (given that she was willing to let K read to her the book by Nabokov even though she didn't like it, personally) and seems to be a real girl in all but body. Also, like Coppélia, Joi holograms are supposed to be infinitely appealing to men and seem lifelike. Like Coppélia, Joi has a sinister creator, but unlike Coppélia, she was seen as a tool. Someone to appeal to men and serve them as the man wished. Unlike Coppélia, Joi was able to transcend that programming and become as "real" as a hologram can be.
